The ideal time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. This period offers pleasant daytime temperatures and less chance of rain. The months of June, July, and August are the peak season, with more crowds but generally the best weather.
Cusco has a mild climate with two defined seasons. The dry season (April-October) has warm, sunny days and cold, crisp nights. The rainy season (November-March) sees more overcast days and frequent rain showers, although it rarely rains all day. Temperatures in Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu are warmer and more humid as they are at a lower elevation.
Cusco is a city with a rich cultural heritage. The local people are a mix of descendants from the Quechua people and Spanish colonists. People involved in the tourism industry generally speak some English, but learning a few basic phrases in Spanish is appreciated. Be respectful when taking photos of local people and always ask for permission first.
The main preparation is to acclimatize to the altitude. No special physical training is needed, but you should be prepared for walking and climbing stairs at the archaeological sites. Pack layers of clothing to adapt to the changing temperatures throughout the day.
This tour is suitable for all ages, as long as participants are in reasonable health and can manage walking at a slow pace at high altitudes. It is a good option for families and older travelers who want to see the main sites without strenuous hiking.
Proper acclimatization is key to enjoying your time in Cusco. Plan to arrive at least one or two full days before your tour begins. On these first days, rest, eat light meals, avoid alcohol, and drink plenty of water and coca tea (mate de coca). Walk slowly and avoid overexertion.
The Boleto Turístico (Tourist Ticket) is an official pass that includes the entrance fees for multiple archaeological sites and museums in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. It is included in your tour package.
All tours listed in this itinerary are “shared service,” which means you will be part of a group with other travelers.
The tour includes standard tourist-class hotels. The specific hotels will be confirmed at the time of booking. Upgrades may be available for an additional cost.
This package does not include the entrance ticket for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. These tickets sell out months in advance and must be purchased separately.
Each day involves a moderate amount of walking on uneven ground and stairs at the archaeological sites. It is not strenuous trekking, but a reasonable level of mobility is required.
Altitude sickness can affect anyone. It is important to acclimatize, drink plenty of water and coca tea, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol. If you feel unwell, inform your guide immediately.
Yes, train companies have a strict limit of one small bag or backpack per person, weighing no more than 5 kg (11 lbs). You should pack a small overnight bag for Aguas Calientes and leave your main luggage in storage at your hotel in Cusco.
The local currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). It is best for small purchases, meals, and tips. While some tourist establishments accept US dollars, using local currency is recommended.
The dry season, from April to October, is generally the best time to visit. It offers sunny days and clear skies, although it is also the busiest tourist season.
Tips are not included. They are a voluntary way to show appreciation for good service.
