The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains are a series of three mountains with stripes of color created by mineral deposits. Located in the Andes near Cusco, it is a less-crowded alternative to the more famous Vinicunca mountain. The area also features a “stone forest” of natural rock formations.
The best time to visit Palcoyo is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, you are more likely to have clear skies and sunny days, which make the mountain’s colors more visible. The shoulder months of November and March can also be good, but with a higher chance of rain.
Altitude sickness is a serious risk and can affect anyone. The most effective way to prevent it is to acclimatize properly.
mate de coca
).The communities surrounding Palcoyo are primarily made up of Quechua-speaking people who are descendants of the Incas. Their main activities are agriculture (growing potatoes) and herding llamas and alpacas. When interacting with locals or taking photos, it is important to be respectful. A simple smile and a greeting like “buenos días” are always appreciated.
How difficult is the Palcoyo hike?
The hike is considered easy to moderate. The trail is mostly flat, and the total walking time is about 3 hours. The main challenge is the high altitude, which can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.
Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes, acclimatization is very important. We strongly recommend spending at least two full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley (which is at a lower altitude) before taking this tour to help your body adjust.
What is the highest altitude we will reach?
The highest point on the tour is the Palcoyo viewpoint, which is at approximately 4,900 meters (16,076 feet).
Are there restrooms available during the tour?
There may be basic restroom facilities at the start of the trail, but there are none along the hiking route itself. Please be prepared for this.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?
The tour operates in most weather conditions, including rain and snow. The guide will make the final decision based on safety. The colors of the mountain may appear less intense on cloudy days.
How is Palcoyo different from the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain?
Palcoyo involves a much shorter and easier hike than Vinicunca. It is also less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience. While Vinicunca is one large mountain, Palcoyo is a set of three smaller rainbow mountains.
Can I ride the emergency horse for the entire hike?
The horse is intended for emergency use only, for travelers who are unable to continue walking due to altitude sickness or fatigue. It is not meant for a recreational ride along the entire trail.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Due to the very high altitude, this tour is generally not recommended for young children. It is better suited for children over 12 who are well-acclimatized and have some hiking experience.
What should I eat before the tour?
On the days before and the morning of the tour, it is best to eat light meals. Avoid heavy foods and alcohol, as they can make altitude sickness worse.
Will I have a phone signal or internet?
You will likely lose phone signal and data connectivity as you leave the main towns and travel into the mountains. Do not expect to have internet access during the hike.
