Preparing for Your Tour

  • Booking and Permits: You must book this tour well in advance. The government releases a limited number of permits per day, and they sell out quickly. You will need to provide your full name, date of birth, and passport number to secure a permit.
  • Physical Preparation: While not as strenuous as the full trek, you should be prepared to hike for 6 hours with elevation changes. General fitness from activities like walking or jogging is sufficient.
  • Acclimatization: The hike itself is at a lower elevation than Cusco. However, it is still important to spend at least one or two days in Cusco () before the tour to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

On the Trail

  • When to Visit: The dry season (April to October) is ideal, with sunnier days. The shoulder months of April, May, September, and October are excellent as they have fewer crowds than June through August. The trail is closed in February.
  • Climate: The trail is in a cloud forest region. The weather can change quickly. Be prepared for both strong sun and rain. Pack layers of clothing, including a waterproof jacket, even in the dry season.
  • Recommendations: Always carry your original passport, as it is required at the KM 104 checkpoint and for entry to Machu Picchu. Use insect repellent and sunscreen.

Key Sites

  • Wiñay Wayna: An impressive Inca ruin located along the trail. Its name means “Forever Young” in Quechua. The site contains a series of agricultural terraces and buildings built into a steep hillside.
  • Sun Gate (Inti Punku): This was the original entry point to Machu Picchu from the Inca Trail. Reaching this point provides a dramatic first view of the entire sanctuary spread out below.
  • Machu Picchu: The main destination. A guided tour will cover the most important areas, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the Room of the Three Windows.

FAQS

Do I need a permit for the Short Inca Trail?

Yes, a government-issued permit is required to hike any part of the Inca Trail, including this short version. These permits are limited and must be booked several weeks or months in advance, especially during the high season.

What is the difficulty level of this hike?

The trek is considered moderate. It involves about 6 hours of hiking on the first day on a well-established trail with some uphill sections. It does not reach the high altitudes of the Classic Inca Trail, making it suitable for most people with a standard level of fitness.

What kind of accommodation is provided in Aguas Calientes?

Accommodation is in a standard hotel or hostel in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu town). The rooms are typically basic but clean, with private bathrooms and hot water. Breakfast on the second day is included.

Do I need to carry a large backpack?

No. You only need to carry a small daypack for your personal items for the day, such as water, sunscreen, snacks, a rain jacket, and your camera. Your main luggage will stay at your hotel in Cusco.

What meals are included in the tour?

A packed lunch is provided for the first day of hiking. Breakfast at your hotel in Aguas Calientes on the second day is also included. You are responsible for your own breakfast on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2.

Can I climb Huayna Picchu mountain with this tour?

Climbing Huayna Picchu is an optional activity and not included in the standard tour. It requires a separate entrance ticket that must be booked far in advance, as permits are very limited. You should coordinate this with your tour operator when booking.

Is there an age limit for the Short Inca Trail?

There is no official age restriction. However, all participants must be in good enough physical health to walk for approximately 6 hours. It is generally suitable for children over 10 years old who are used to walking.

What is the best time of year to do the trek?

The dry season, from April to October, is generally the best time to hike. This period offers more stable, sunny weather. The Inca Trail is closed for maintenance every year during the month of February.

Will I have time to explore Machu Picchu on my own?

Yes. After the 2-hour guided tour on the second day, you will have additional free time to walk around the main areas of the sanctuary before you need to take the bus down to Aguas Calientes for your train.

What should I do with my main luggage?

You will leave your main suitcase or travel bag in secure storage at your hotel in Cusco. You only need to pack a small overnight bag or daypack for the 2-day trip
